Upside Down
What's happening??!? What a strange weekend?
I wasn't going to write about all of this but I
just got off the phone and it seems that another friend of mine is expecting yet another unexpected circumstance.
On Friday night, during
the tournament, I received two phone calls from my two closest friends. I missed the first one and received a voicemail from my friend who is breaking up with her long-time boyfriend. It was a tough message to listen to and unfortunately, I didn't get the message until prettty late.
The next call was from my other friend who had broken his ankle. He was calling from the hospital and I spoke with his mom. He has since undergone surgery and I can't wait to get home to him.
Lastly, just minutes ago, I received another call from my dear, dear long-time friend, who is like a father figure to me. He's undergoing another surgery. I was with him during his first one and this one is completely unrelated.
What a strange thing to have so many loved ones going through such painful things all at the same time. Is it a full moon out? Are there more of you out there that are hurt or feeling pain? I am so sad when I think of each of them and the worst part of it all is that I'm over 1,000 miles away and can't do anything about it.
Must leave room to check out and head to airport now. Can't wait to get back to my own bed.
The Cookie Thief
(This was a great little story sent to me by my good friend Carter from Dallas, Texas.)
The Cookie Thief
By Valerie Cox
A woman was waiting at an airport one night
with several long hours before her flight.
She hunted for a book in the airport shop
bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop.
She was engrossed in her book but happened to see
that the man beside her as bold as could be
grabbed a cookie or two from the bag between
which she tried to ignore to avoid a scene.
She munched cookies and watched the clock
as the gutsy cookie thief diminished her stock.
She was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by
thinking if I wasn't so nice I'd blacken his eye!
With each cookie she took he took one too
when only one was left she wondered what he'd do.
With a smile on his face and a nervous laugh
he took the last cookie and broke it in half.
He offered her half as he ate the other
she snatched it from him and thought Oh, brother!
This guy has some nerve and he's also rude
why he didn't even show any gratitude!
She had never known when she had been so galled
and sighed with relief when her flight was called.
She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate
refusing to look back at that thieving ingrate.
She boarded the plane and sank in her seat
then sought her book which was almost complete.
As she reached in her baggage she gasped in surprise
there was her bag of cookies in front of her eyes!
If mine are here she moaned with despair
then the others were his and he tried to share!
Too late to apologize she realized with grief
that she was the rude one, the ingrate, the thief.
Phone Fraud (a public service announcement)
Received the following message from my friend
Chaddie:
Wachovia has become aware that someone or a group of individuals making telephone calls are claiming to be from the
American Bankers Association (ABA). These individuals are part of an identity theft scam.
ABA Warns of Fraudulent Phone Calls—March 12, 2007It's been reported that con artists are calling people in Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania and telling them that their personal information is on the Internet.
These calls are not being made by the ABA. This telephone scam is being used to obtain personal financial information that ABA would never request.
Things To Do to Avoid This ScamThe ABA is working with law enforcement to identify the source of the phone calls and stop them. Here's what you can do:
Never give out your financial information to anyone unless you have initiated the contact—this includes emails
If you have already responded to this type of call or email by providing your personal financial information, contact your financial institution immediately to protect your account
Inform the ABA about fraudulent phone calls and emails that use ABA's name by sending them to alert@aba.com
It's called Lake Jackson but where's the lake???
I just wanted to take this opportunity to highlight a few interesting, non-pool related things from my weekend in
Lake Jackson, Texas.
I was there for another pool excursion. I got in early Friday afternoon so I could goof off and my friend Carter picked me up from the airport in Houston. I was starving!
We decided to drive to the coast to check things out. As we passed through all the oil refineries to our left and then more oil refineries to our right (it made
Commerce City, aka the armpit of Colorado, look like a residential area), we came to a stand-alone building with a giant sign that read "BOILED CRAWFSH" (not to be confused with "broiled" which I was convinced it was for a long time).
So, we flipped a U-y and went inside. It was there, that I ate 6 oysters on the half shell and 43 crawfish. YUM-MY! Well, the order came in either 3 pounds or 5 pounds. I ordered the 3 pounds and Carter helped. Afterwards, we counted and I ate 40 of those little guys. Carter ate 23. My finger were pretty raw from peeling by the end of it all. It was well worth it though.
We did end up returning for another dozen oysters and 3 pounds of crawfish the following night. Unfortunately, they seemed to have given us the bottom of the crawfish barrel that second night. If that's what I got the first night, I never would've gone back for more.
The tournament went fairly well and I really had a lot of fun this weekend.
I got to spend some quality time with my friend Kyu from the tour, and get to know her a little better. She's such a sweetheart! We actually ended up playing each other on Saturday night and then the three of us (her, Carter, and I) went to dinner together. I've got a busy pool month ahead of me. I'm very excited!!!
Oh! Funny story... First of all, I just wanted to mention that NBA star,
Yao Ming, was on my flight to Houston. Man! That guy is tall!
Okay, so, while I was waiting at the airport for Carter to pick me up, I was sitting on this bench and this airline employee sat down next to me. She was eating some chinese food that came from terminal E, she told me. I told her it smelled good and it was making me hungry. To which she responded, "So, you're chinese?" "Yes," I said. Without any hesitation, she says, "Now, let me ax you suttin'. Now, what's the diffrence between chinese and vipnamese? Cause, y'all all look tha sayme ta me!"..............uh........ well..... I promise I not even kidding when I tell you this actually happened to me.
It took every ounce of me to not just start laughing histerically because what else can you do??? I collected myself and very politely explained that we were from different countries. All she said was "oh." Wow. That was an interesting encounter.
Anyway, I made it home safely Monday afternoon and here I am, two days later, writing all about it.
What's with the early daylight savings this year?!?
So, in case you weren't already aware of this,
Daylight Savings will be arriving three weeks earlier this year, on March 11th. Of course, if you don't already observe it, don't panic, you still won't. There's some political influence behind this decision, but what are
your thoughts on the matter?
I love it, personally! I've heard a few concerns about how it's going to affect Outlook and other calendar softwares. That will be interesting to see. But personally, I'm happy about it! You wouldn't think that a vampire like me would give much of a hoot about daylight but I'm a huge fan of it and the more the better! (especially since my daytime hours are already so limited)
Anyway, here's a fun little poll for you.
