Long Day...

My day began at 11:30 this morning. I just realized that as I opened this new posting.

There was a retirement party for Jim, a former co-worker of mine (who's like a mentor to Hikle). Cake was at 1:30. Hikle and I had lunch around noon before then. It was really touching. I brought him a card and a copy of my book. Hikle told me later that Jim was choked up that I came and gave him a copy of my book. Jim’s so awesome! I hope he does a whole bunch of nothing!

After that was over, I met my mom at my house. We had all these errands to run but didn’t end up doing anything but waiting for an hour for new spark plugs for her car. That sucked but at least its okay now.

At 6 o’clock I had to be at the studio to get fitted for the outfits I’m wearing next week for the photo shoot. My shoot is on Friday. I’m so excited! The outfits are super cute too! It’s amazing what people can knit and crochet these days.

That went pretty quickly. When that was finished, my mom dropped me off at Steaks where Chisolm was playing in the ping pong tournament. I sweated all his matches and hung out for while. He lost the match for the driver’s seat and came back to double-dip the guy. It was like Forrest Gump. It was pretty awesome!

On a side note, Megan called me to see if I had plans for tomorrow night. Apparently, Helena Thornfeldt and Monica Webb are in town. The three of them are doing a workshop at Paradise Billiards on Saturday. Well, also apparently, they’re having an invitation-only tournament with the three of them, Melissa Little, Laura Smith, and three of “Denver’s pool stars” (as advertised - Deb Winter, Jackie Broadhurst, and my own teammate, Bonnie Plowman). As it turns out, Jackie can’t make it tomorrow so Megan called to see if I could fill in.

Well, that’s a no-brainer!

I did, however, have a lesson that I needed to reschedule but my student was very understanding and plans to stop by to watch the tournament.

Wish me luck!

1 Article, 9 Holes, 12 Books, and a Venus Fly Trap Later...

Today, I played 9 holes of golf on a par 3 course with Kendra. I finally got to break in those saddleback golf cleats I bought on sale for $19.95 seven years ago. We had so much fun! She was very encouraging too. We played on our high school golf team together back in the day but weren’t good enough to play with the boys. “It’ll all come back to you,” she said. And it did! I had a 30-foot put that missed the hole by about a foot. It was so awesome!

While we were hanging out, she said, “My mom read that article you wrote in the Denver Post.” What?!? Well, here’s what happened… On August 20th, I had submitted an article to YourHub.com. Coincidentally, I submitted the article while I was posting the ad for our garage sale three weeks ago. There was a banner that read, “Do you have an engagement story to share?” So, I thought, “What the heck?!”

So, apparently, Kendra’s mom saw the article while they were on the phone together and clipped it to give to her to give to me. The photo is the actual scanned copy of the clipping. I had no idea it had gotten published, especially not in the paper! That’s crazy!

Tomorrow, I’m stopping by Hikle’s office for some going-away cake for our friend Jim that’s retiring. I went to Wal-Mart around midnight tonight with my mom to pick up a retirement card and some jack-o-lantern lawn bags. While in the gardening department, I saw some Venus Fly Traps for sale. They were so cute I couldn’t resist! I’ll keep you posted on their diets.

Oh, and when I got home, I had to sign a dozen books for PoolTees.com. They have a MySpace.com page where they give away a free t-shirt once a month and I offered to send him some books to include in his giveaways.

Well, I gotta get up early tomorrow so I’d better get to bed.

I broke the bullet!

The *Magic* Bullet, that is.

An interesting day...

Today I:

  • Got my hair redone at 9:00am. I got it done a couple weeks ago just before I left for camp, but was very unhappy with the way it came out. I called and scheduled to get it fixed today.
  • Came home and was back in bed by 11:30am.
  • Got up around 2pm and did some work for a few hours.
  • Left for dinner with Hikle at 6:00pm after he was stuck in traffic for an hour. We tried to go to our favorite Vietnamese Buffet place but when we pulled up, the people next door told us they weren’t open on Tuesdays. That’s crap! Especially since there was nothing on the sign that said anything about being closed on Tuesdays. We were hankerin’ for some Vietnamese food too. Oh well. We went to our favorite Chinese Buffet instead. It was reeeeeally good… I had crab legs.
  • Got a fortune cookie that read, “Fresh air and sunshine and plenty of grace slam the door in the doctor’s face.” WHAT?!?!? What kind of fortune is that?! And, how am I supposed to add “under the sheets” to the end of that one?! That sounds like some silly fortune that Hikle would make up. Like, "a bird in the sky is as good as two in the tree" or something like that. In the meantime… Me?!?!??? Grace?!????? (to the style of Elaine from Seinfeld)
  • Bought some new green tea bobas to make at home.
  • Attempted to make pear – watermelon – lime juice fruit smoothies with boba and broke the magic bullet. GGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRR!!!!! The part attached to the base that the blade sits on is completely split in half. Stinker!!!
  • Went to Wally World at 11 o’clock to buy a blender so we could finish making our smoothies.
  • Sent an email to the Magic Bullet customer service regarding the warranty. I hope I can get it fixed.
  • Practiced for a bit and hung out with Vegas while typing this blog and watching Futurama.

Writer's Block

Block o' what?!

Good News – Bad News

Good news: Yours truly is the newest writer on AZBilliards.com. This is probably the number one website for up-to-date pool/billiard news. I can't even imagine how many hits it must get a day. My pool blog is also linked to their Player Blogs section and I have officially been added as one of their "Columnists." How exciting!

The interesting thing is that I'm not even a very good writer. The AZBilliards "House Pro" sent me an email last week asking if they could post some of my stuff on their site. I feel so honored.

Bad news: Writer's Block. With newly added recognition comes more responsibility. I have so much writing to do and whenever I sit down to do it, I draw a blank.

I wish I were a better writer.

Good news: I know what I want to write about. It’s not for lack of inspiration or subject matters.

Bad news: Just spitting it out.

Don’t worry. I’ll get ‘er done.

I have devoted my entire day today to nothing but laundry and writing. Already, I have found an excuse to leave the house. I just went for a mile and a half walk with Vegas around the neighborhood. I thought it would wake me up a bit. I guess it worked.

As you can see, I’m already doing something else (blogging here) instead of writing about pool. Does writing about writing about pool count?

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Okay. I’m okay now. Back to work.

"We both think you're way too funny and amazing to be old..."

I received an email today from Megan, from camp, that read, "We both [her & DiDi] think you're way too funny and amazing to be old." HA! That's great! I'll take that as a compliment from two very intelligent 17-year-olds.

I just realized I never finished my camp story. I've been back for four days now and it seems like I just got back.

Camp was over Monday afternoon, not before our Tai Chi performance on Sunday night and another couple hours of roller skating with my kids. I decided to stay in Vail Monday night instead of driving back to Denver. Thank goodness! I was SO glad I wasn’t driving East-bound on I-70 that day. Everyone and their family were trying to make their way back to town.

Oh! I also went canoeing and did archery on Sunday morning. That was awesome!

I didn’t bring a camera last weekend, so I’ll post some pictures as I get them from people.

By the time I got back to Vail, I already had three emails waiting for from my kids. I miss them so much!

Things have been super busy for me this week. My articles and Pool Blog are now being syndicated on AZBilliards.com.

Also, a couple weeks ago I went to a model call for Knitscene magazine. It’s a really trendy magazine for knitters. There’s a ton of stylish fashions in the front and in the back, it teaches you how to create them all. Anyway, I just found out this week that I got the gig! I’ll be one of the models you see on the website & magazine for the spring 2007 issue. Who knows? Maybe I can make the cover. Ha!

Wow. It really seems like a lot’s been going on this week.

Well, that’s all for now.

Adventures at Camp

I spent my Labor Day weekend at the YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch as a camp counselor. As much as I was dreading it, it turned out to be an incredibly rewarding experience. It was amazing!

9/1/2006 8:59:58 PM
I just arrived at the camp where I signed in and moved into my cabin. After a long two hour car ride through lots and lots of fog over Berthoud Pass (NOT FUN!), I’m finally here. Traffic was horrific. Everyone was rushing to try to leave town. My head is pounding at the moment. And, poor Chisolm - the last text message he received from me read, “OMG. I’m in the middle of no where. What did I get myself into?” The next thing I knew, I was out of service area and never got back to him.
You see, I agreed to be a counselor at this camp, the OLDEST counselor, the ONLY ADULT COUNSELOR at this camp this weekend. Apparently, last year, there were some strange pranks played between the boy & girl counselors so they changed the age limit to 18+ so in order for the under 18 counselors to participate, they need a “supervising adult” to share a cabin with. Enters, Samm. So, I’m sharing a cabin 10 17-year-old girls. Oh joy… Ugh…… Seriously! What DID I get myself into?
Well, thankfully, there were no activities scheduled for today. I went to bed so late last night and got my hair done at 1 o’clock today. It ended up taking four hours! I miss Chisolm like crazy! He was gone for a week and a half in Vegas for the APA team thing, came back for 3 nights, left for Vail for two nights for golf, came back for one night, and now I’m gonna be gone for three nights only to see him for only one night and then won’t get to see him again for another two nights later. This sucks!

Day 2. So, as it turns out, the 10 teenagers I was expecting turned out to only be six (one of whom is an older sister that is staying with us to hang out with her younger sister). The two sisters speak my native tongue, one girl has a serious chip on her shoulder & is bitter towards everyone (especially me since she’s forced to share a cabin with me), one is a foreign exchange student from China (Sophia), and the other two are good friends from the same h.s. (DiDi and Megan). They’re my favorite! I wish I could’ve been just like them at their age. They’re two beautiful, intelligent girls with such a great head on their shoulders and so much going for them. They’re so mature and I found myself having hours and hours of intellectually simulating conversations with them.

Yesterday was a jam-packed day that started at 7a.m. and ended somewhere after midnight.

At 7:30a.m., we headed over to the cafeteria for breakfast. There, I met Terrence. I had no idea at the time that he would end up being such a great resource for the weekend. He just asked to sit at the table with us and we quickly became friends. He is half Chinese and half Dutch. His wife is 100% Dutch. They have two adopted children, a 10 year old black daughter and a 7 year old white son. He wants to adopt an Asian baby next. He is really a true Samaritan.

From 10-11-ish, the counselors huddled in a huge group in the parking lot where we participated in several team building activities also called “Friend Groups.” Some activities included passing the hula hoop through a circle while holding hands with the person beside you, passing more foreign objects while only using specific parts of your body, and various other tasks that required running, chasing, and nearly injuring ourselves. Yeah, yeah, it was fun.

The next hour was would be absolute torture. The group I was selected to be in was the “Independence Red Dogs.” The groups are all named after dogs of some color. This simply means that two other counselors and I were in charge of 30 sixth graders. Potential nightmare, you’re thinking? Yes, it would be for this next hour.

Unfortunately, the next hour would be scheduled for “Friendship Groups” and no workshops or activities were planned. It would be our first hour with our kids and we (some as new counselors) would be expected to spontaneously entertain them with random get-to-know-each-other activities. Since we had an older group, many of them had participated in most of these things for years and were not very interested in being involved. I had a heart to heart with the two culprits but it didn’t seem to help.

Fortunately, there were these two adorable friends who had taken a liking to me and had deemed themselves my personal right and left hands. Mandi & Tessa. They were very sweet.

Lunch was next

From 1-2p.m. we were scheduled for an art project where the kids were allowed to iron on their own Chinese Zodiac sign on their shirts. There were also small words that went along with each sign that they could cut out and put on their shirt however they wanted. Amazingly, only one camper burned herself.

Next, we broke into three groups, Chinese Dance, Kung Fu, and Tai Chi. I requested the Tai Chi (not to be confused with Chai Tea) because it seemed like it would be the mellowest. It would turn out to be an enriching experience. I really enjoyed it a lot. We learned a routine that will be performed Sunday night. I hope I don’t screw it up. My thighs are sore from practicing.

When we got back to the cabin, we walked around and collected some firewood. I started a huge fire in the fireplace. Megan, DiDi, and I pulled the cushions off the couches and hung out in front of the fire telling stories about ourselves. It was really nice.
